Guell park Gaudi Print E-mail

Passing around Park Guell will reveal a fantastic collection of Gaudi creations especially the famous dragon a symbol of Barcelona.

A typical mosaic style can be found all around the park. Gaudi's collaborator, the architect Josep Jujol, created much of the ceramic design by himself, adding his signature and religious phrases to the pieces that went into the park. This fact was recently discovered in 1964. The snake-like benches at the top of the park and the medallions on the ceiling of the Hall of a Hundred Columns are examples of his work. There is a fantastic view of the city from the main spot where the benches are, and the walkway to this place is supported by tree-like pillars that seems to grow out of the ground like trees. Those of you with an eye for detail will notice the use of recycled everyday objects used in the mosaic decoration along the way, such as teacups and plates. At the beginning of the XX century this kind of approach was something new in constructions, and was inspired by the economic practice of cladding buildings with waste tiles.

The park was commissioned by Güell, as a place to be enjoyed by the Barcelona aristocracy. Now everyone can enjoy the park.

Rent a roon in Barcelona Print E-mail
In Barcelona everyone rents out rooms, and it should take you about one week to find a nice place maybe more Frown.

These are the most popular places to look for rooms:
  • Check the noticeboard at the Youth Information Centre, called CIAJ (Centre d'Informació i Assessorament per a Joves) at Calle Sant Oleguer, 6-8 in the Rambla de Raval Metro Liceu or Drassanes. Remember to check the dates and be prepared for crowds in the spring and autumn, so get there early
  • Visit Barcelona University in Plaza Universidad, near Placa Catalunya and check out their notice boards. In the busy season the notice boards are cleared every couple of days, so the ads are usually current.
  • Visit International House in Calle Trafalgar 14 where lots of students rent out rooms, there are also notices up for work vacancies.
Remember to check our classifieds for rooms. Other good links for finding rooms online:

www.bcn.es/ciaj
www.habitatgejove.com
www.loquo.es

Expect to pay around 250-300 Euro per month (plus bills) for cheapest rooms. Standard (nice!) rooms are about 350-400 Euro a month. Anything more than that is considered expensive, take your time looking around for one that meets your requirements.  If you have the choice, the best time to look for a room is towards the end of the month, as this is when people move out and more rooms are available.
Check out our Language Corner for some useful words and phrases.
