The good advise from whom, where and when to rent a car in Barcelona is much better any search engine results.

From my personal experience I would recommend to book a car far in advance and use websites able to search from multiple locations to compare the prices. I have to mention I almost newer had a good experience with last minute offers If you planning to visit Barcelona especially during Catalonia holidays and congresses you have to book a car at least 2 month before you come.

Here is another advise from me I am not recommend to leave the city by car within 2:00PM-8:00PM the first day and 3:00PM-10:00PM the last of each holiday, trust me you will spend 3 times more in a traffic cue than normally it could take. 

Bellow I prepare the biggest Barcelona holidays

24th June St. John's Day festival (Sant Joan) all do fireworks and beach parties, this year traffic jam was starting from 11:00am

11th September Day of Catalonia

24th September La Mercè festival - God bye summer festival, biggest firework show in Barcelona.  

1st November - Well known all Saints day, be prepared if you are leaving Barcelona this day, usually all cars are taken3 month before. Book in advance.

Also Barcelona is a congress city, it hosts congresses like GSMA, Bread & Butter: Fashion and street culture trade show, Sónar and hundreds more. Check is your visit not interfere with this events or book car earlier.
