Casa Batllò Print E-mail

Known as the prelude to Casa Milà (La Pedrera), Casa Batlló is a wonderful and extraordinary house on Passeig de Gracia, designed by the Antoni Gaudi. The colors and shapes used in this work were inspired by marine life, such as the facade which is reminiscent of natural coral. Some people say it looks like it is made from bones, with the balconies being skulls and the supporting pillars being the bones.

The attention to detail in this building is incredibly breathtaking. Apart from the initial decorative features, present excellent architectural decisions such as varying the sizes of window depending on it's position and floor. It has been said the architect Josep Maria Jujol, a colleage of Gaudi, was responsible for the glass and ceramic work in this building, though evidence is not clear. Jujol also contributed to La Pedrera and Parc Guell some years later

Guell park Gaudi Print E-mail

Passing around Park Guell will reveal a fantastic collection of Gaudi creations especially the famous dragon a symbol of Barcelona.

A typical mosaic style can be found all around the park. Gaudi's collaborator, the architect Josep Jujol, created much of the ceramic design by himself, adding his signature and religious phrases to the pieces that went into the park. This fact was recently discovered in 1964. The snake-like benches at the top of the park and the medallions on the ceiling of the Hall of a Hundred Columns are examples of his work. There is a fantastic view of the city from the main spot where the benches are, and the walkway to this place is supported by tree-like pillars that seems to grow out of the ground like trees. Those of you with an eye for detail will notice the use of recycled everyday objects used in the mosaic decoration along the way, such as teacups and plates. At the beginning of the XX century this kind of approach was something new in constructions, and was inspired by the economic practice of cladding buildings with waste tiles.

The park was commissioned by Güell, as a place to be enjoyed by the Barcelona aristocracy. Now everyone can enjoy the park.

Barri Gòtic Print E-mail

El Barri Gòtic (the Gothic quarter) is the medieval quarter of Barcelona. Spend your time just walking around in the maze of narrow streets and explore the many squares, Plaza Reial, for example as it bears a kind of splendor when you enter through its arched gateways.

The neoclassical facade surrounds the many palm trees on the square. Located just off the Rambla it is usually a little quieter, although late at night there are often a few drunk tourists who end up celebrating their vacation loudly in the fountain at the center.

Another main square in the Barri Gotic is the Plaça Sant Jaume, where the City Hall stands proud. It seems like every street from the Barri Gotic merges onto this square. Apparently it is where the locals demonstrate and is basically an important meeting place. I was there during Christmas 2006 and they had a huge beautiful nativity in the middle, but I believe that they have that every year. Something to see.

The Plaça del Pi is interesting too, especially on Thursday morning when they have a little market of local goods such as cheese, meat, and cakes. On Calle Bisbe you cannot miss the "bridge of sighs" which is quite pretty and photographed but which was also apparently built in the 1920's... Quite a disappointment, but still a nice picture.
Don't forget to look up to see the gargoyles and gorgeous facades.
